In the Computer Science/Electrical Engineering building at the University of Minnesota, there are several computer labs, some run windows, others “UNIX”. These “UNIX” labs consist of Sun workstations (with the odd keyboard, not sure if they are SPARC or Operton based). Instead of running Solaris or Open Solaris, both closer to being “true” UNIX distributions, they run Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a GNU/Linux distribution, not a UNIX distribution. Heck, GNU is a recursive acronym that stands for “GNU Not UNIX”. Yes, it is UNIX-like but it is still very different in a theological sense. The oddest thing they did with Ubuntu is to use the Gnome login manager, but they aren’t using Gnome as the desktop manager, instead they are using the stupid desktop manager built into X server. EMACS and g++ are the ‘tools’ that are to be used in the class. Today, however nano replaced EMACS in one’s group. Mozilla wouldn’t launch on any of the terminals, so links2 was substituted in one’s group. Everyone else just complained and twiddled their thumbs as the internet wasn’t ‘available’ for them to complete their lab.

Busy does no justice to the state of my schedule for the next few weeks, especially this weekend as the finishing touches are placed on the new Weblogs.us website and it goes live. Freshening up the blog and ‘standard’ page layout occupies most of my free time, which isn’t very large right now. This last weekend some refinements to the various plug-ins were made to include their JavaScript file in the header only on the front page, this reduces the page load size for the blog and all non-front-page pages. As for this the CSS files were separated so that the special calls for the homepage don’t have to load in all the other pages, and vice versa.
My studies in the next few weeks will take much more time than in the previous weeks, causing the allotment of time dedicated to this blog and working on the new Weblogs.us website will dwindle for the time being. Naturally the new website will take priority over this blog for the time being so it may be a week or two before the next update, depending on when the new site is launched.

Well now that one attends the U, one no longer enjoys the extended four day weekend due to the MEA conferences. Other colleges in the area do observe this occasion, but the lack of days off now results in a nice semester break. If it wasn’t for the little brother, MEA wouldn’t be missed at all. One leaves for school before he, and returns after. The only exceptions are Fridays when there isn’t a physics exam, that’s most Fridays.
We, the hunting part of one’s family plus old-neighbors that moved back from the east cost this summer, went up north to hunt/explore the woods. This weekend it was more exploring and less hunting. A lack of grouse due to weather conditions, it was cloudy, and chilly (40 degrees for highs) promoted exploration of areas that we haven’t been to in years. The winch was only used once, and we followed an old logging trail that has in the past been too wet to traverse. Naturally, on Saturday night we had what everyone calls a “Havlik Fire”.All-in-all it was a good weekend.
