WP Lynx 0.5.0

What’s this, a new version of WP Lynx? Memorial day counts as “early summer” correct? Anyways, this version of WP Lynx includes the promised Open Graph support. By default it will take the og:image and og:description as the default thumbnail and print body. In addition, some tweaks were made to the core so that sites with newlines occurring in the middle of a tag are parsed correctly. Finally, a few bugs in the Lynx Print adding interface (Show/Hide link) were fixed.

    • Let me know what you think. Originally, this was due in late June. However, Open Graph support was much easier to add in than I originally thought. Additionally, the method I’m using for Open Graph parsing is much faster than the full scraping routine. Hence, there is a switch to do only Open Graph parsing, unless no Open Graph elements are found (1 HTTP request vs many requests).

  1. This was working fine until I upgraded around 4-5 plugins and now is inactive in the pop-up window after entering the link and clicking “Get”. The arrows to choose the thumbnail(s) no longer work and “Insert Into Post’ just goes to a white screen within the pop-up where it remains there frozen. “Insert All” produces the same after.

I’ve been using the latest version of WordPress 3.4.1 for a while but have upgraded other third party plugins. I’m considering, when I have some time, to deactive those recently upgraded plugins to see if it’s one of those causing the issue but this should probably be addressed just the same. Thanks for your time.

    • Jack,

Have you tried doing a settings reset on WP Lynx? If the settings were messed up for some reason behaviour like this may happen. To reset your settings go to the WP Lynx settings page. Then click on the “Help” tab. In the drop down, click the Import/Export/Reset link on the left side navigation area. Then click on the “Reset” button.

If this does not fix the issue you may have a conflict with another plugin, in which you will have to disable all other plugins to see if starts working properly again. If it does, then you need to re-enable the other plugins, one-by-one, checking each time for WP Lynx to stop working. Please let me know if you find a plugin that causes conflicts.

  2. I tried to “lynx” this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/08/world/asia/manila-and-rebel-group-take-step-toward-peace-plan.html.

But I got an error message: error in retrieving the item and that there are 3 redirects involved.

I tried “lynx-ing” another NYT article and also another article from another source. Both worked fine. So there is just something peculiar about the above article.

Great plugin, BTW. Is fine the way it is for me, but hoping for an frontend interface at some stage for my clients.

    • I see that it intermittently works (if you keep trying to get the Lynx Print for that page you will get it to work some times, other times you end up in redirect land).

Also, in terms of a frontend interface, what are you looking for (I’m all ears for features to add in future versions)?

  3. Hey was there any update on that frontend feature request for lynx.

I am currently using wp-frontend to allow users to create and edit posts on the frontend but would also like them to be able to use lynx print on the frontend as well.

Any ideas on how this can be done?

    • Right now, it isn’t really possible. I have been in the process of rewriting several sections of the plugin that would allow this to work. However, progress has stalled due to time conflicts this fall (my graduate studies take priority over coding). I hope in early January I’ll be able to get something together on the 1.0 version of WP Lynx.
